Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

The Austin Lima Sister Cities Committee is presenting our 6th annual art exhibition, Art Across the Americas, featuring Peruvian and North American artists at the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection Library, The University of Texas, Austin, Texas.  An artists‚ reception will be Saturday, October 6, 2012, from 6-9pm, with special guest, the Consul General of Peru, Sr. Carlos Polo, who will be traveling from Houston.  Money from the sale of the art work will go to the artists and to the Center for Adolescent Mothers, in Lima, Peru (  Funds raised for the Center will help them buy books in Spanish for their library and to implement improvements in their bakery, which helps the center be self-sustaining.

Peruvian artists in this year’s Austin exhibition include Nelly Mayhua Mendoza, Enma Alcarraz Guia, Myrgett Fortún Mayhua, Richard Diaz, Moises Escriba, Frank Araujo Ayala, and Del Nino Ladron. Local Austin artists include Angueser, Bill Oakey, Toni Chandler, John Bielss, John Holdridge, Jill Alo, Lloyd Cuninngham, Alonso Rey-Sanchez, Danica Lee, and Susan Randle.  Artistic techniques include photographs, prints, and paintings, in styles ranging from the abstract, to portraits, and landscapes.

Admission to the reception and exhibit is free and open to the public.  Music and Peruvian refreshments will be provided. Attendees at the reception will choose a People‚s Choice Award, with prizes provided by Jerry‚s Artarama.  This is a wonderful opportunity for Austinites to see beautiful work from artists in one of our 12 Sister Cities, as well as work by local artists, much of it with a Peruvian or native American theme.  This exhibition will be located at the Latin American Library at UT and will close October 31st.
