What’s the best cellphone for kids? Ask Dad Labs…

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

So, my 9 year-old (soon to be 10) has already tested the waters a couple of times. And for purely selfish reasons, I did look around a couple of years ago. My basic requirements are that it have a GPS locator,  a limited address book and that calls can only be made to numbers on the address book or to 911. My problem is that there were so few options and none of them fit the bill perfectly for me.

Well, the guys over at DadLabs.com have a pretty good run down of the current options available on the market with all the pros and cons. Guess it’s time to take another look. I’ve got more research to do.

For just 50 cents per child, kids and adults can experience the magic of the arts at Children’s Day Art Park. This exciting summer program features local musicians, dancers, storytellers, magicians, mimes and crafts people. Youngsters can visit the Instrument Petting Zoo (where they can see, touch and try to play the instruments), talk to symphony musicians and hear them play their instruments, see a Ballet Folklorico, hear a Latin jazz band, follow a real Pied Piper along the Lemonade Trail to the Magic Oak Tree and try their hands at different art projects under the Art Tent.

Check out Bat Jam!

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

So, the coolest thing happened last night. I was sitting out in the back yard last night, just after sunset. Out of nowhere, a bat swooped down and buzzed the yard. He did it at least ten times. The kids got all excited and were jumping around. That’s when I decided it was time to finally go down to the Congress Ave. I’ve been meaning to do it. As an Austinite, it’s kind of a duty. We were going to wait to go until this weekend, but then my wife found out about Bat Jam.

The Austin American-Statesman is putting on a shindig this coming Thursday called Bat Jam. They’re advertising it as a family music night by the bridge with bat rings, tattoos and face painting. Free snow cones for the first 200 people and free “Best Dad. Ever.” t-shirts to the first 100 dads.

Austin Family deals doesn’t have any deals for this event, but it sounds like a fun time will be had by all – and we plan to be there. Come out and celebrate Austin.
